Youth

The Sutherland Youth Program is dedicated to providing recreation activities for local youth. T-ball begins for boys and girls in pre-school. From there, children advance to Pony and Peewee league and even into American Legion Junior Baseball. The Youth Program maintains two beautiful baseball and softball fields located near the Swimming Pool Park.

The American Youth Soccer Association parents group has just completed construction of a new soccer field. Nearly 300 children, including players from area towns of Hershey and Paxton, participate during soccer season.

Girls volleyball and basketball and boys football and basketball is available for youth beginning in the fourth grade. These leagues are operated by the Youth Board and serve as preparation for Junior High sports.

Wrestling is also available for school age children.

The Anchor Youth Center, 820 First Street, provides after school help with homework and daily activities for Sutherland's youth.  It also houses the Lil' Sailors Preschool.  The community can rent the Anchor building for all occasions.  For more information, contact Michelle Blomstedt at (308) 386-2332 or (308) 386-2241.

Parks

The Sutherland Railroad Park is located on land donated to the city by Union Pacific Railroad from its right-of-way. It includes a large pavilion, playground equipment, barbecue grill and picnic tables, and horseshoe pits. It is an especially popular place to be during the annual Fourth of July celebration.

The Swimming Pool Park is located on the west edge of town. It features a large outdoor pool, playground equipment, sand volleyball pits and a baseball and softball complex.

History

The Village of Sutherland was incorporated in 1905.  Through the years, residents have taken pride in keeping up with the times, and looking after the welfare of neighbors and friends.  Sutherland, already of Union Pacific's "mainline" across Nebraska's plains, became an air corridor as well, for coast-to-coast airmail flights in 1924.  For more information on Sutherland's history, visit the Nebraska...Our Towns website.
